Smart OMS meters present the open communication standard for measuring the consumption of electricity, gas, water and heating.
2016 started with a resounding success for Diehl Metering. The HYDRUS and SHARKY meters are the first products in the world with integrated communication to be certified by the OMS Group for their interoperability according to OMS Generation 3.
As an independently accredited certification centre, the DVGW [German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water] ran the tests and issued the corresponding certificates on the basis of positive test results.
The development comes in response to customers' pressing desire to be able to use meters from various manufacturers in projects without the need to adapt their readout infrastructure. Reducing the complexity of the system in this way contributes to considerable cost savings in the installation and operating phases, thus increasing the incentive to use modern reading systems to increase efficiency.
In addition to the external tests carried out,internal preparations were also necessary for achieving this important milestone. The specimens were subjected to intensive preliminary tests in in-house laboratories.
Use of the testing tool developed by the OMS Group ensured the results could be reproduced at the testing centre. After this, three devices had to be produced for each type and put into service for metering purposes before being submitted to the testing centre.
All the characteristics relevant to the test are summarised in the manufacturer's declaration, plus a test report of the radio approval according to the RTTE directive and operating instructions are required. Within four weeks of being received, the testing laboratory ran the tests and follow-up questions were asked by the specialists.
The experiences gained mean it will be possible to integrate OMS certification into the normal development process and that verified interoperable devices will be available when the product is launched. The additional tests are another quality assurance measure for our system products.
